Total ad spending for the 2008 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is expected to reach an all-time high of $545 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

A 30-second spot in this year's championship game is expected to cost an advertiser $1.5 million. Only the Super Bowl is more expensive (in terms of post-season playoff ad dollars), averaging $2.7 million for a 30-second spot.

A majority of the tournament's ad revenue (81%) comes from returning sponsors. Here is the average spent annually over the past five years from the top 5 advertisers:

  1. General Motors - $70 million
  2. Coca-Cola - $22 million
  3. AT&T - $20.7 million
  4. Anheuser-Busch - $15.8 million
  5. SABMiller - $13.8 million
